Obituary of Hilda Diegel

Hilda Diegel was born to parents Christian and Maria Ost in Colaceni, Bessarabia Romania on August 1, 1921. Hilda passed away on November 10, 2024, at the age of 103 years.

 

She arrived in Canada with her parents and siblings in 1927 as a young immigrant girl of six years old. Hilda and her family settled in the Hanna, Alberta area.

 

Later she met Williard Diegel and they married on November 2, 1942.

 

Her married life consisted of working hard with her husband Williard on the farm and raising four children. In 1972 Hilda moved to Hanna with Williard. She also worked as a janitress at the Hanna National Hotel. Subsequently, she worked for several years at the Hanna Palliser Nursing Home. Later she also cleaned and cooked for a work crew.

 

Hilda was very fluent in both her English and German. She maintained written and phone communication with relatives in Germany and a cousin in Bern Switzerland.

 

She remained a dedicated member of the Scapa St. Peters Lutheran Church, as well as Hanna Redeemer Lutheran Church. Hilda enjoyed being a choir director at the Scapa St. Peters Lutheran Church. She enjoyed singing in the Lutheran Church choirs and the Seniors’ Circle singing groups.

 

Hilda loved to crochet. She was self-taught and crocheted over the years a collection of beautiful doilies, tablecloths, vests, as well as dresses for her doll collection with professional results.

 

She was also an accomplished sewer of a seamstress level up to and until her eyes and hands gave her trouble and continued to the best of her ability.

 

Gardening and landscaping were also favorite past times of Hilda’s.

 

Hilda resided in the Hanna Manor, both Hanna Lodges and to date in the Hanna Long Term Care. She moved to Hanna LTC on February 13, 2023.

 

She was predeceased by: husband Williard, daughter Scharlotte Robinson, father Christian Senior, mother Maria, brother Christian, sister Emma Albrecht, sister Bertha Radke, great grandson Grant Ferris and great granddaughters: Annabel Ferris and Shelby Diegel.

 

Hilda is survived by: her son Lester Diegel, son Gerry (Amy) Diegel, daughter Glenda (Peter) Reuteman; granddaughter Jeanine Diegel; grandsons: Kalvin Diegel, Wylie (Tammy) Diegel; Cory (Dana) Diegel; Mark (Patti) Robinson and Craig Robinson; great-grandchildren: Montana (Ethan) Diegel, Ty Diegel, Taylor Diegel, Tristan Diegel, Anna Robinson, Travis Robinson and great-granddaughter Paisley Tomkow. She also leaves behind: sister Maria Diegel, brother Oscar Ost, sister Ida Schnell and several nieces and nephews.

 

Thank you to the Hanna Lodge staff, Sheila Nicholson who assisted Joan Netter with travel services provided to Hilda for medical appointments when her children were unavailable.

 

Thank you to Dr. Mdawe, Dr. Fortna and staff, Hanna Hospital staff and to Hanna Long Term Care for their care given to mom throughout the years.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hanna. A private interment will take place at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.
