Obituary of Ruth Curry

Graveside Service 2 P.M. Hanna Cemetery Luncheon at 3 P.M (Immediately following the graveside service) Hanna Seniors Circle, 519 3 Ave W, Hanna, AB T0J 1P0, Ruth Rushfeldt Curry ~ April 10, 1924 to June 7, 2017 Ruth was born at Youngstown, AB to George & Alma Becklund who were homesteaders in the Big Stone District. She had an older sister & brother, Esther & John. Ruth started school at Monitor, AB where the family had moved. The dirty-thirties evaporated the opportunities at Monitor so after a couple of years the family were back at Big Stone. Later Aunt Esther, who was 10 years Ruth's senior, got a job teaching at Brown School which was about 40 miles south west of their home. It was decided that both Ruth & Esther would board with the Bill Andrus family & attend Brown school, one as the teacher & one as a student. Esther became much more than a sister to Ruth, a feeling that lasted all her life. During this time their transportation was always by horseback &, with Esther in charge, they made many epic rides. The 40 miles from home to school was done regularly & they also made a couple of 70 mile rides. One of these was from Big Stone to Gem for the rodeo! Ruth always said that if you were following Esther on horseback you rode hard to keep up. Ruth later attended Camrose Lutheran College & earned a Teachers Certificate. She enjoyed teaching & also helped her parents on the farm & ranch operation. In 1949 Ruth married Lyall Curry who lived in the same district. They were blessed with 3 sons & in 1964 Karen Ruth came along to complete the family. Ruth & Karen moved off the ranch to Red Deer in 1979. After a few years Ruth moved to Brooks where she had made many good friends. Ruth had a stroke in 2008 which took away her independence. In 2009 she moved to the Hanna Long Term Care facility. Even though Ruth's speech was not good her mind was & she rarely had trouble communicating. Family was always Ruth's main priority. She loved & enjoyed her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, siblings Esther & John, niece Lois & daughter-in-law Marcie. She is survived by sons Ed, Clayton, Greg & daughter Karen and their families. Ruth's family would like to thank the staff of Hanna Long Term Care for the excellent and compassionate treatment that they gave Ruth for the last 8 years and right up to her passing.
