Wilfred Vernon Lumsden
Apr 17, 1930 - March 31, 2024
Dad was born on April 17, 1930, in the Hanna Hospital. When he was 18, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy for 3 years and was stationed in Halifax and Victoria. He then returned to Hanna, buying his own farm a couple of miles away from his dad’s homestead. He married Ila Mulgrove on Dec 30, 1953, and had four children: Diana, Dwane, Barb & Lois.
Dad worked 31 years for Ducks Unlimited and was honored in 2002 with a Cairn & plaque located by a dam 4 miles south and 1 mile west of Spondin.
He enjoyed many sports including curling, golfing & trapshooting. He also enjoyed watching baseball and seldom missed a Blue Jays game on TV. As kids we can remember a lot of our house was furnished through his weekend bonspiel wins.
He won top prize at many trapshooting tournaments which included an Alberta provincial championship and was on the 5-man Alberta team that won a Canadian Team Championship in Brandon Manitoba in 1985.
In his later years, Dad was famous for his greenhouse tomatoes that he loved to give away to everyone he knew. Dad took a liking to golf after his retirement and became very avid at it. He moved into the lodge at eighty-nine years of age. At the age of ninety-three, he was still golfing two rounds a day for the entire golfing season.
Wilf is survived by one son Dwane (Danica), two daughters, Barb (Gus) & Lois (Doug) & Seven grandsons: Trevor, Trent, Bradley, Bryan, Brock, Jordan & Cameron and ten great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Ila, in 2013, and his daughter Diana in 2015.
In accordance with Dad's wishes there will not be a funeral. A family graveside service will be held at the Hanna Cemetery on Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 pm followed by a luncheon for family & friends at the Hanna Legion Hall at 2:00 pm.
