Obituary of Charles William Rosenau
Charles William Rosenau, youngest son of Charles M. and Anna Rosenau, passed away peacefully at Hanna Extended Care on October 5, 2017 at the age of 88.
Charles was born on August 5, 1929 on the farm south of Youngstown, youngest brother to Edna, Art, and stepbrother Elroy Lando. He went to school in Youngstown and quit after grade 8. He then went farming with his father and brother Elroy. Determined and perhaps sometimes obstinate after childhood years in the thirties, and finally seeing better crops in the forties and fifties, Charles was a farmer and never wanted to do anything else. Increasing in land and cattle when he could, while taking great pride in his work, he loved to see the land produce grain and grass. Charles loved the prairie and looked forward every spring to hear the return of the meadowlarks and then the swallows, and to see the blooming of crocus’ and later the wild roses. His love for working the fields in the spring was second only to the harvest. He took enjoyment in raising cattle, would be anxious for the coming of calves, and then looked forward to weaning in the fall.
In 1965 he put an ad in the paper for a housekeeper. Darlene Levenne came with her son Les in answer to the ad, Glen was born in 1968, and she and Charles were married in 1969. Charles continued to farm up until 1999 when Glen and his wife Tina bought most of the land, but Charles kept some land and cows, and stayed very much involved by helping in many ways. He fed his own cows and chopped waterholes for them in the winter until 2011.
In 2013 he could hardly believe seeing a 60 bushel wheat crop off of a 25 acre piece. This was also the last harvest that he helped with by hauling grain from the combine with his 3-ton. Charles and Darlene spent their last winter on the farm that year and moved into the Hanna Lodge June 1, 2014. After a having a fall around Thanksgiving time in 2015, Charles’ mobility deteriorated so that he was moved into the nursing home in March 2016. He was very content and appreciative of the care and attention he received there.
If Charles was ever asked the most important date in his life, he would say March 4, 1973. This was the day he gave his life to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 48 years Darlene, son Glen (Tina) and their family Raylene, Bryce and Crocus; daughter-in-law Cheryl Johnson and her family Eric, Vicki and Kyle (Mary-Anne) and their children Zachary, Rebecca, and Jonah; sister-in-law Edna Rosenau; Gospel Chapel family and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
He was predeceased by his parents Charles M. and Anna Rosenau; brothers Elroy Lando, Arthur Rosenau; sister Edna Triebwasser; brother-in-law Lawrence Triebwasser.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 12,2017, at the Youngstown Gospel Chapel with interment following the service at the Youngstown Cemetery.
