Obituary of Elvira (Vera) Jusepina Valentini

Elvira Valentini joined her Lord and Saviour on September 24, 2021 at the Hanna Hospital with her family by her side.

Vera, as she was known by all her friends, was born in the alpine town to Tuenno, Italy, the middle child of three sisters.  On April 4, 1957, she married her next door neighbour, Fortunato.  Their marriage was then blessed with the arrival of her son Domenico in January 1958.  In the spring of 1965, the family immigrated to Canada settling into the C.N.R. station in Sheerness.  In December of that year, the family became complete with the arrival of a beautiful daughter, Maryanne. A few years later, the family moved to Hanna where they met many, many friends who would soon become her new family.

Gardening was Vera’s passion, turning her home and yard into a botanical oasis.  Sewing and knitting also provided much enjoyment.  She sewed outfits for her children, knitting sweaters,  hats and mitts for anyone who wanted or needed them.  Later on, her obsession turned into quilting, making beautiful quilts that would all be donated to various charities.  Vera’s greatest talent of all was her cooking, preparing dishes that were comparable to the best Italian restaurants in the country.  She deeply valued her parish and was a long time member of the C.W.L. Vera was often described by many as a “firecracker,” well known for her sharp wit, strength and determination.

She leaves to mourn:  son Domenic (Starla), daughter Maryanne (John), grand daughters Elisse (Parker), Sara, Emilia, and Elizabeth as well as great grandchildren Holden and Addison, all of whom she cherished so much.  Knowing that she is now with her husband, siblings and parents looking down on us brings us all comfort.

We, her family, would like to thank the community of Hanna.  Mom was loved, supported and cared for by so many people in so many different ways, making her life full, fun and comfortable.  We are forever grateful.

A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 7:00 pm at St. George’s Catholic Church, Hanna, Alberta.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St. George’s Catholic Church, Hanna, Alberta.

If desired, donations in memory of Elvira can be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Foundation.
