Frank Unsworth

Obituary of Frank Lyle Unsworth

Mr. Frank L. Unsworth of Garden Plain Alberta passed away suddenly on his farm on Sunday, October 22, 2017. Born July 13, 1961 in Hanna Alberta, Frank was raised on the Unsworth homestead in the Garden Plain district. In 1987 Frank purchased Uncle Albert’s quarter, east of Highway 36, and in 1995 added three more quarters; one of which was the Lewis homestead. The Lewis homestead was settled by his Grandmother Frances’ father, (Jasper) Horace Lewis, in June of 1909, which was then bought by Frank’s father Louis in the early 1950’s. Frank was particularly proud that this land had been farmed by Great Grandpa Lewis’ descendants for over 108 years continuously. It was on this section of land that Frank lived until his untimely passing. On Feb 15 of 1989 Dawn Liisa was born, who remained the light of his life until the end. An avid hockey fan, Frank played on various competitive youth and men’s recreational hockey teams in the Hanna area. His love of the Oilers was a constant source of elation in the 1980s and frustration since; not to say this couldn’t be their year. This love of hockey spilled into every area of life, including playing in the farmyard during the summer and on the dug-out all winter. He had an endless interest in playing with his nephews, nieces, daughter and grandson; in particular spending countless hours skating till dusk on the dug-out. Almost everyone who knew Frank respected his abilities on the pool table and he took great pride in teaching everyone how to play the game he loved as early as they could stand and hold a stick. However, running around the pool table was expressly forbidden and everyone knew when he got upset if you pulled on the pockets as you ran! Frank always enjoyed riding his ‘horses’ and passed this love to his family members as soon as they could push start the ol’red Honda 50. His family and friends held a special place in his heart, to the point where he could recite your birthday and almost any other special date in your life. He always welcomed a visit and will be remembered fondly as having a gentle soul, a contagious smile and a big heart. Predeceased by his father Louis and mother Laura; brother Robert; uncles Robert, Frank, John and Roy; aunts Cora, Eileen, Elsie and Gwen; and niece Michelle. Frank’s memory will be cherished by his loving daughter, Dawn (Matt) and Grandson Ezra of Kelowna; sister Sharon and nephew Brian and children Korbyn, Hailey, Paige and nephew Michael (Jackie); brother Robert’s children, nephew Larry (Nancy) and children Matthew and Hannah, niece Linda (Aaron) and Taylor, niece Krysta and Koen, and niece Trina; brother Gerry (Teresa) of Blackfalds and nephew Joshua and children Jay, Jeremiah, Jamielyn, niece Shalae (Rhian) and children True, Aris and Lyra, niece Meryhia and child Devylah; and brother John (Sandra) of Edmonton. Also left to mourn are his uncles George of Ponoka, Harold (Shirley), Cyril and Albert (Muriel) of Hanna, and their families; sister-in-law Adelle (George) of Hanna; as well as numerous close friends from the Hanna, Garden Plain and surrounding region.Charitable donations may be made to: Hanna Minor Hockey Hanna AB T0J 1P0
