Obituary of Evelyn Mildred Howery
Evelyn Mildred Howery, beloved wife of Delbert Howery, passed away at Hanna Long Term Care, on Monday April 5, 2021, at the age of 88.
Evelyn was born in Hanna on November 26, 1932, the fifth girl in a family with six children. Her father James Slater worked for the CNR at the time and when Evelyn was three years old, her dad was transferred to Edmonton. The family, wife Mildred, daughters: Marjorie, Marian, Iris, Phyllis, and Evelyn moved to Gainford, Alberta, where her brother Jim was born. When Evelyn turned fourteen, her dad was transferred back to work in Hanna.
Delbert Howery had a grocery delivery service in the late 1940’s and fell in love with Evelyn the first time he saw her while delivering groceries to the Slater household. (Father once told me (Kevin) that he fell in love with mom at first sight). Delbert and Evelyn were soon married on September 2, 1951, and subsequently had five children: Terry, Deland, Kevin, Idele, and Robin.
Evelyn was pretty much a homemaker all her life and passed away April 5, 2021. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Delbert Howery; children: Idele Howery, and Robin Howery; father James Slater, mother Mildred Slater; sisters: Marjorie Henderson, Marian Platten, Iris Walker, Phyllis McKinnon.
Evelyn is survived by her children: Terrance Howery (Susan), Deland Howery, and Kevin Howery (Charlene); five grandchildren; Ronnie Leeks, Jennifer Richardson, Richard Leeks, Sarah Howery and Leslie Leeks; 13 great grandchildren; and brother Jim Slater (Linda).
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday April 14, 2021, at the Hanna Cemetery.
If desired, donations in Evelyn’s memory can be made directly to the Lung Association, or the Cancer Foundation.
