Obituary of Rachel Barbour Elm

It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that the loving family of Rachel Barbour Elm (Herron) announce her passing in the early morning of October 28th, 2017 at Hanna, AB 14 days short of her 95th birthday. Rachel “Rae” was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and was the third oldest of four sisters. Rachel was raised in Hanna, AB where on March 21, 1942 she married Clarence Elm, the love of her life for more than 67 years. Rachel was predeceased by her parents Archibald and Rachel Herron, husband Clarence, two sons Russell and Ronald, three sisters, Mae Kober, Margaret Gullekson and Jeanne Hutton. Rachel is survived by one son, Les (Joan) Elm of Red Deer, AB, two daughters, Diane (Dennis) Heggie of Red Deer, AB. and Val (Richard) Fischbuch of Hanna, AB., daughter-in-law Gail Elm of Maple Ridge, B.C., daughter-in-law Margaret Elm of Calgary, AB Grandma is lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren, Rick (Darilyn Coon) Elm of Red Deer, AB, Greg Elm of Taber, AB, Steven (Jillian Grutter) Elm of Calgary, AB, Selina (Neal) Zaluski of Saskatoon Sask., Ryan (Annarita) Elm of North Vancouver, B.C., Adam Elm of Maple Ridge, B.C., Corey (Jenna) Fischbuch of Hanna, AB, Jeanine (Jamie) Hiemstra of Spruce Grove, AB, Andrea (John) Watkins of Calgary, AB, and Bryce (Allyson) Heggie of Calgary, AB, along with 15 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. While Clarence was overseas during WW II Rachel stayed with her sister Mae and husband Ted Kober in Vancouver and worked in a delicatessen. When Clarence returned from overseas in 1945 they returned to Hanna and started to raise a family. When the kids got older Rae worked at Flemming’s clothing store and for many years at Smith’s Shoes. Upon retirement she enjoyed many happy times with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. Rae and Clarence spent many enjoyable summers at the cabin at Rochon Sands, Buffalo Lake, AB. Over the years they also enjoyed trips to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and Scottsdale AZ. Rachel was a member of the Alberta Order of the Eastern Star, Hanna Chapter Morning Light #44 and was an active member of the Hanna Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 Ladies Auxiliary. Rachel was a resident of the Hanna Seniors Lodge for the past eight years where she enjoyed many friendships and activities.
