Obituary of Leontine (Lena) Kautz

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Lena Kautz on November 23, 2020 at the age of 98. She immigrated to Canada in 1950 to marry Nathaniel (Dan) Kautz. Together they farmed in the Solon area with their 2 sons. After many enjoyable years harvesting crops, raising livestock, and tending a large garden, they moved into town. There they settled into town life full of afternoon coffees, quilting at the church, singing in the church choir, volunteering at the rummage sale, and evenings playing bingo or aggravation. And there were always the fishing trips. Even with a full life in Canada, Lena treasured her trips back to Germany to visit her family. In between, there were phone calls with her brothers and a few special times when they came to see her. A 3-week RV tour of Western Canada with her niece and family and a surprise visit by her brothers and nephews for her 90th birthday were especially cherished. Lena spent many enjoyable hours with her grandchildren. When they were young and visiting her in Hanna they would bake, make strudels, ride bikes, and play tag in her huge backyard garden. In later years, her smile lit up the room when with any of her great grandchildren were with her. Her move into Calgary made it possible for this to happen many times each week. Lena is pre-deceased by her husband Dan; their two infant sons; her parents Daniel and Emile Schaupp; her stepmother Salomine; her brothers: Waldemar, Adolf, and Emil. She is survived by: her son Erwin (Katherine) Kautz, their children Elyse (Kalen) Ingebrigtson and their daughter Lily, Adam (Trisha) Kautz and Nathan Kautz; and her son Richard (Marnie) Kautz, their children Chalsey (Jason) Bugeaud and their daughter Addison, Justine (Kyle) Robinson and their children Asher and Iris; her brothers Gerhardt and Karl Schaupp and their families in Germany plus numerous nieces and nephews and their children. We will all deeply miss her. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lena’s memory can be made to the Hanna Redeemer Lutheran Church, Box 746, Hanna, AB, T0J 1P0. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at the Hanna Cemetery, Hanna, AB.
