Obituary of Cecil Niel Ernst

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cecil Niel Ernst, age 76, on December 22, 2024, at the Hanna Hospital. Cecil was born on April 4, 1948, at the Sibbald Railway Station during a spring blizzard. His initials, CNE, were a fitting tribute to the Canadian National Express, the place of his birth.

Cecil spent his early years in southern Alberta, living in Sibbald, Stavely, Craigmyle, Heisler, and Hussar. He grew up helping care for his younger siblings, developing a strong sense of responsibility that would remain with him throughout his life. Cecil was a lover of sports, playing a variety of them during his youth and carried this on throughout his life. Known for his quiet strength and determination, he worked as a farmer, rancher in the Hand Hills, and in the oil patch, always committed to providing for his family.

A proud father and grandfather, Cecil was deeply devoted to his loved ones. He is survived by his companion, Maryann; his son, Bradley (Nicki) Foden; daughter-in-law, Michelle; and his four grandchildren: Brayden (Danielle) Foden, Taylor (Zack) Foden, Zac Foden, and Brynn Foden. He was also the proud Papa of three great-grandchildren: Rylee, Olivia, and Mya. Cecil leaves behind his eight siblings: Lois Reiffenstein, Grant Ernst, Pat (Brian) Nielsen, Deb (Jeff) Weder, Brenda (Brad) Karg, Joe (Glenna) Ernst, Kathy (Marshall) Bandura, and Carey (Kevin) Fecho.

Cecil was predeceased by his first wife, Lola; his mother, Edna Preston; brother Bill; brother-in-law Ed; and sister-in-law Diane.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Hanna Royal Canadian Legion.

All who knew and loved Cecil are welcome to join in remembering his life and legacy.

Cecil will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering dedication to family, and his kind, good-natured spirit. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Cecil.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cecil’s memory may be made to the Hanna Ladies Auxiliary or Diabetes Canada.
